IPNI develops app for calculating crop nutrient removal - PlantCalc

November 3, 2014. Penang, Malaysia – A new PlantCalc App has been recently released from the International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) as part of its effort to improve the accuracy of nutrient uptake and removal estimate reporting, and make science-based estimates freely available to the public.

Designed for the iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch, PlantCalc estimates crop nutrient removal of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), potassium (K), and sulfur (S) for a wide range of field crops.

“Data on plant nutrient use are becoming increasingly important for the refinement of nutrient management at farm or field levels as well as in larger-scale nutrient balance calculations and models,” explained Dr. Paul Fixen, IPNI Senior Vice President and Director of Research. “It is well known that estimates of plant nutrient removal for any one crop can vary significantly across growing environments. At the farm level, measured variability in nutrient concentrations of crops indicates a need for estimates based on farm-specific analyses; however, such data are seldom available, creating a need for reasonable estimates from aggregate data sets at the smallest scale available. IPNI’s goal is to base its estimates on identifiable relevant analytical data or from relevant published sources.”

PlantCalc was developed from a still widely used web-based version that was released in November 2013. This web-app is available to all operating systems with an Internet connection. For more details see http://www.ipni.net/article/IPNI-3295.

PlantCalc provides a truly portable solution that does not require internet connectivity. Results are calculated based on yield goals selected by the user, and displayed in either Metric or US/Imperial units. Users also have the option to copy, print, or email results. This is a multilingual calculator that is accessible in six languages including: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, and Mandarin.

About IPNI
The International Plant Nutrition Institute (IPNI) is a not-for-profit, science-based organization dedicated to the responsible management of plant nutrition for the benefit of people. Through cooperation and partnerships with respected institutions around the world, IPNI adds its strength to agronomic research, education, demonstrations, training, and other endeavors. Best management practices for nutrient stewardship encourage the concept of 4Rs - applying the right nutrient source, at the right rate, at the right time, and in the right place.
