Managing acid, upland soils in Southeast Asia
The greatest potential for future increases in agricultural production and productivity in Southeast Asia lies in agricultural land classified as 'upland' or rainfed land. Acid upland soils, mainly characterized by low soil fertility and diverse, potentially unstable, agricultural systems, occupy 64% of the total land area in Southeast Asia. The key to achieving and maintaining intensified, integrated and productive systems in these areas lie in the proper management of soil fertility. More
Multiple nutrient stresses in intensive cropping areas of North Vietnam
Degraded soils cover a total of about 3 million ha in Vietnam. Despite the generally low soil fertility of degraded soils, grain production in a typical rice-rice-maize rotation can reach 18 t/ha annually in the lowlands of the Red River Delta because of excellent crop care, water availability, and significant inputs of up to 10 t/ha organic manure combined with adequate use of inorganic fertilizer. There are, however, indications of multiple nutrient stresses and soil constraints. More
